Best Practices for using Computer Labs

Working With Files

  • Name and save your files as soon as you create them.
  • Documents saved on library computers will be erased every time the machine restarts. Use our hard drives only for very temporary storage. Save your files to a USB drive or to the cloud.
  • Back your work up frequently.
  • Give files meaningful names.
  • Use folders to keep files organized.

Printing

  • Check the print preview to make sure the formatting on your document is acceptable.
  • Use color printing only when needed.

Scanning and Copying

  • Be sure to retrieve your original documents when you are done.
  • Copyright law of the United States (Title 17 U.S. Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. The person using the equipment is liable for any infringement.

Security

  • Using a USB drive? Scan it each time you insert it into a port.
  • Working with files containing personal data? Restart the computer before you leave.
  • Make sure you save your work first, or you will lose it.
