Read eBooks Offline

When you 'borrow' Ebsco eBooks, you can read them offline, without having to be connected to the internet. You can borrow Ebsco eBooks and download them to read on a desktop or laptop computer, or to an iPad, tablet, e-book reader, or other mobile device. books can currently be borrowed for 7 days. At the end of that time, the book disappears from your device. You can borrow up to ten books at a time.

Steps to downloading Ebsco eBooks:

  1. Download Adobe Digital Editions [desktop or laptop]  or the Bluefire Reader App (mobile devices). Both programs are free.
  2. Activate your chosen reader.
  3. Set up your free personal account with Ebsco.
  4. Identify books you wish to use and download them.
  5. Open using Adobe Digital Editions or Bluefire.

Downloading to Desktop or Laptop Computer

Search the eBook collections and select one or more books that you would like to use.

  • Click on download link (located underneath the brief description (results list) or in the left-hand sidebar (detailed description). If you have not signed into your MyEbsco account, you will be prompted to log in.
  • In the pop-up window,
    • Select the number of days you would like to have the book. The maximum is 28 days.
    • Select the format: either PDF or EPUB (some books are only available in one format).
    • Verify that you have Adobe Digital Editions installed.
    • Click on the Download button.
  • In the bottom corner of your screen, look for the window for the downloaded file. Click on the button and open the file.
  • You can also go to your Downloads folder and open the file from there.

Adobe Digital Editions

Adobe Digital Editions is an eBook reader that allows you to download and manage eBooks and other electronic documents.

Setting Up Adobe Digital Editions

1. Make sure that you have Adobe Digital Editions installed on your computer.  Adobe Digital Editions is available for free download.

2. You will need to activate Adobe Digital Editions on your computer by creating an Adobe ID and password, and then logging into Adobe Digital Editions.

3. If you've previously created an Adobe account but can't recall your password, reset your password at Adobe.

4. If you are using a portable device or e-book device, you'll need to activate it with your Adobe ID and password.  A list of supported eBook devices is available from Adobe. Note: the Bluefire reader is a better choice for mobile devices.

Setting Up a MyEbsco Account

Before you can check out an e-book, you need to set up a MyEbsco account. This is a free service, and allows you to:

  • Check out e-books.
  • Make personalized notes on saved items.
  • Save and store articles to your account.
  • Organize your stored research into folders for easy use.

To get started, go to Ebsco E-books, or any other Ebsco database.

On the next screen, choose to create a new account.

Fill out the form to create an account.

In order to be accepted, the password you create must have:

  • 1 number
  • 1 special character
  • 6 character minimum

You must also consent to the collection of personalized data. If you have questions about this, be sure to read Ebsco's Privacy Policy. If you don't feel comfortable consenting to this, you can still read Ebsco e-books, but you cannot download them for off-line use.

When you finish setting up your account, you can use your new user name and password to sign in.

Downloading to a Mobile Device

Search the eBook collections and select one or more books that you would like to use.

  • Click on download link (located underneath the brief description (results list) or in the left-hand sidebar (detailed description). If you have not signed into your MyEbsco account, you will be prompted to log in.
  • In the pop-up window,
    • Select the number of days you would like to have the book. The maximum is 28 days.
    • Select the format: either PDF or EPUB (some books are only available in one format).
    • Verify that you have the Bluefire Reader installed.
    • Click on the Download button.
  • The book should appear in your Bluefire library.

Bluefire Reader

The Bluefire Reader is an eBook reader that allows you to download and manage eBooks. It allows you to download books from the eBook collections directly to your mobile device. Digital Editions does not support direct download to mobile devices.

  • The Bluefire Reader is available for iOS, Windows, and Android operating systems.
  • You can download if for free from the Bluefire site. It's also available on the Google Playstore, and from other sites.
  •  You will need to authorize your device get access to e-books protected by the Adobe Digital Rights Management. You can do this  by creating an Adobe ID and password, and then opening your Bluefire Reader. The first time you open the reader, you should be prompted to authorize it. If you are not prompted to authorize, find the Information button in the top toolbar, and click to see your Account information. You can authorize from this screen.
  • If you've previously created an Adobe account but can't recall your password, reset your password at Adobe.
